About Me

A Passion for Journalism

Hi! I'm Darian.

I graduated from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in May of 2020. I received my degree, a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications and Psychology. I attended graduate school at Syracuse University where I received my Masters of Arts in Magazine, News, and Digital Journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School Of Public Communications in May of 2022.

I sometimes, well, most times, hate writing and/or talking about myself. The statement, "Tell me about yourself," can be hard. What should I say? How do I best convey who I am through a paragraph or three to four verbal sentences? It doesn't seem enough to say that I am an avid reader, with more books than I know what to do with. Or in a day I might imagine 162 different ideas and scenarios that could be added to a story I'm concocting, and that my happiness stems from being a storyteller and being the outlet for others to share their stories.

When deciding what path I would take as a journalist, I started to think about what aspect of this career I enjoyed the most. I came to two conclusions: Culture and Community. The two intermingle, but are valuable in different ways. Culture allows us to connect with those who have similar views and learn from those who may greatly differ. I want to learn and write about people with different backgrounds. I want to better understand your customs, your arts, and the way you communicate. What makes you different from me? From others? And what do we have in common? Community then connects us all together. We can lean on others for support, share experiences, and engage and develop. What is something your community does every year that makes you unique? What resources does the community offer? How can I best show what makes your community special?

My dream job is to be a travel journalist. I want to travel the world, meet strangers, dive into different cultures, and write stories about people with dreams and ideas as big and vast as mine. Until then, I want to work for local newspapers and publications to share the stories of those from communities I live in and I look forward to sharing those stories with you.
